After Hours at Soigne K

Asia Society and Soigné Kothari, owner of the Madison Avenue boutique Soigne K—featuring ready to wear and accessories by rarely available Indian designers—hosted a special reception on Wednesday, June 8th to thank the committee, supporters, friends and honorees of Asia Society’s March 2011 Gala Celebration of Asia Week, a city-wide event celebrating Asian art and attracting a discerning international clientele.

The champagne reception featured delicious Indian hors d’oeurves, encouraging guests to browse and shop Soigne’s beautifully edited selection of “fusion” apparel, accessories and one-of-a-kind traditional Indian garments, with 10% of the proceeds from the evening’s sales donated to Asia Society.

Jewelry Designer Rita Chung at AsiaStore

Rita Chung celebrates Asian American Heritage Month at AsiaStore demonstrating the art of jade jewelry making. Rita Chung’s inspiration for her unique designs comes from the feeling and energy she gets from her stones. It is Rita’s belief that these colorful stones bring out one’s energy, while Chinese knots unite the natural elegance. Eastern and Western flavors are incorporated into the designs as a result of her multicultural background.

Nayana Jha celebrates Asian American Heritage Month at AsiaStore showcasing her artwork that explores the spiritual world of Indian and Eastern mythology. Each design joins a bold palette with a brave line, expressing spiritual Asian themes: the Indian visual landscape, Hindu and Buddhist mythology and iconography all with vibrant colors echoing the aesthetic of her native India.

In an exclusive interview with Asia Society she reveals her stages in style.

Kokeshi Doll Artisit: Lisa Hodsdon at AsiaStore

Hodsdon Kokeshi dolls are inspired from the Japanese culture, nature and the natural beauty of wood. Jacob Hodsdon overseas the woodturning and Japanese- American artist Lisa Hodsdon specializies in painting and design. Many years of travel and inspiration from the American and Japanese cultures have helped Lisa grow as an artist.The designs for the Hodsdon’s dolls are interpretted from the traditional Japanese Kokeshi dolls, taking inspiration from the natural beauty of wood and blending naturally with the use of color. Each doll is uniquely handcrafted with special attention to detail and fine craftsmanship, signed with a combined signature of Jacob and Lisa.

Artist Karen Ford demonstrates Silk Felting

Asia Store celebrates Asian American Heritage month with an in store demonstration of silk felting by artist Karen Ford. Karen’s interest in textiles goes back to her days at FIT, where she studied the history and construction of different fabrics and found herself particularly fascinated by felt- the oldest textile known worldwide, originating from Central Asia.

Through her textiles, Karen harmonizes form and function, successfully creating one of a kind scarves and shawls that embrace color, texture and movement.

AsiaStore Jewelry Designer Chorthip Lagnese

AsiaStore celebrates Asian American Heritage month with a personal appearance and demonstration by designer Chorthip Lagnese recent winner of the 2011 American Jewelry Design Council New Talent Contest. Born and raised in Thailand, Chorthip refined her artistic skills at FIT in New York City. Now dividing her time between New York, Thailand and Italy, Chorthip’s multi cultural exposure gives her jewelry a remarkable depth and originality.
