China China

The porcelain figures in this book are at once permanent and fragile, responsive yet closed, lustrous but cold. There is a curious incongruity in pairing human forms with patterns, suggesting oppositions of life and death, art and craft, the old and the new, and rational and emotional expression. (Ah Xian, 2002. Pbk, 64pp)

This book accompanied the exhibition at Asia Society, New York, Oct 8 2002 – Feb 16 2003.
